Exploitation of mussel byssus mariculture waste as a water remediation material

چکیده
Dye pollution represents an important environmental concern, especially from textile industries in the South of Asia. On the other hand, biomass accumulation derived frommussel processing in alimentary industries is also an environmental problem. In this research, these two environmental issues are addressed by proposing the reuse of mussel's protein anchoring threads, the byssus, as disposable material for dye water removal. The byssus was selected as substrate because it contains a distinctive variety of functional groups that can be exploited for diverse chemical interactions. This material was utilized in its native metaled state and in the de-metaled one, in order to study how the chemical state of the functional groups influences the adsorption properties of both anionic and cationic aromatic dyes. The results of comparative experiments of adsorption showed a higher uptake in the native metaled byssus for a model cationic dye, methylene blue, while the de-metaled byssus showed a higher uptake for a model anionic dye, Eosin Y. These results are considered in light of different uptake mechanisms, supported by the analyses of isotherm model parameters, in which diverse functional groups are involved as a function of substrate and dye chemical states.

Byssus attachment strength of two mytilids in mono-specific and mixed-species mussel beds.
The mussel Xenostrobus securis is endemic to the brackish waters of New Zealand and Australia, but has successfully invaded the inner Galician Rías of NW Spain, where it coexists with the indigenous mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. In this laboratory study, the plasticity of the byssus attachment strength of two mytilids was compared by manipulating substratum, salinity, and bed assembly. M. g...

Interfacial water constitutes a formidable barrier to strong surface bonding, hampering the development of water-resistant synthetic adhesives. Notwithstanding this obstacle, the Asian green mussel Perna viridis attaches firmly to underwater surfaces via a proteinaceous secretion (byssus). Extending beyond the currently known design principles of mussel adhesion, here we elucidate the precise t...

The management of Greenlandic municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash could be improved. Presently, the fly ash is disposed of in Norway as the fly ash is classified as hazardous waste. Fly ash contains high amounts of leachable heavy metals, but also resources that could be beneficial for reuse. In electrodialytic remediation a direct current is applied to a contaminated particulate ...

The Chinese green mussel, Perna viridis, is a marine bivalve with important economic values as well as biomonitoring roles for aquatic pollution. Byssus, secreted by the foot gland, has been proved to bind heavy metals effectively. In this study, using the RNA sequencing technology, we performed comparative transcriptomic analysis on the mussel feet with or without inducing by cadmium (Cd). Our...

Protein-based biogenic materials provide important inspiration for the development of high-performance polymers. The fibrous mussel byssus, for instance, exhibits exceptional wet adhesion, abrasion resistance, toughness and self-healing capacity-properties that arise from an intricate hierarchical organization formed in minutes from a fluid secretion of over 10 different protein precursors. How...
